Growing up, many of us probably remember spending quite a long time playing Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town. Back then, Friends of Mineral Town makes us feel like a grown up as we have to take care of our farm as well as social life. Due to the fact that not many other games offer that kind of satisfaction, it is not a surprise that it won a special place in many.

Although it is special, not everyone of us played all of the Harvest Moon series, which probably means that some might not keep up with the news. This leads to some surprise and confusion when there is an announcement of the Friends of Mineral Town remake, yet it is called Story of Seasons instead.  Many of you might already know, but for those who have no idea, we are here to answer the question, is ‘Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town’ Harvest Moon?

Back in 1996, a farm simulator game called Bokujou Monogatari (牧場物語 translated as Ranch Story) was released in Japan. That game was then published in the west by Natsume who localized the title to Harvest Moon. This started the beginning of the Harvest Moon series we all loved. However in 2014, Marvelous who is the developer, decided to end their partnership with Natsume and start working with xSeed games for the distribution of Bokujo Monogatari series.  Although the distribution rights have changed, Natsume still holds the rights to the name of “Harvest Moon”. Since that is the case, when Marvelous developed the next Bokujo Monogatari, it was released under “Story of Seasons”.

For some of you, this might be a bit confusing. If it was once released as Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town, can they actually release Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town which is a remake of that? As a matter of fact, they can as Natsume is only the publisher and not the developer. As the developer, Marvelous has the rights to come up with a remake for their game they have made in the past.

So back to the question. Is ‘Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town’ Harvest Moon? Yes and Now. Yes it is a remake of Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town as it is both based on  Bokujou Monogatari Saikai no Mineraru Taun (牧場物語再会のミネラルタウン), but no it is not a Harvest Moon as it is published by a different company. To put it simply, it will be a remake of Friends of Mineral Town, only under a different name and upgraded feature.
